Stretch Lefty

The video sucks, but you really only need to hear them.

Remember when Sublime was the hottest thing around? I think it had something to do with their take no shit, yet laid back hippie vibe that said ‘chill with us, smoke a blunt and get down, that’s all’. Everyone understood that mentality – and if they didn’t, they wanted to.

Infuse that energy with vintage flow and a bit of street smarts and you get Stretch Lefty, a band out of the Columbus hood, filled with optimism and drive. The racially mixed band members have had a heavy dose of Motown, Pink Floyd and Bob Marley growing up, which could explain the genre transcending album, yet they look like the just walked out of an Unkempt-New Kids on the Block video. Not sure Marvin Gaye would have commission Miss Hot Shorts for a photo op, but this is exactly what keeps these guys fresh.

The lyrics aren’t pretentious, or about the downtown gun fight, the boys know that the best things to bitch about are the things that most people have accessible to them. Groove things to be exact. So don’t expect a mid-town version of the last Fugees album, songs like Housecall sit just right with both the old skool crowd and the urban miscreants. “I get down like James Brown, rockin’ your whole town, when I’m on the mic, MCs don’t come around. The doctors in the house get ready for you operation, he’ll fix you with the quickness, leave you with the good vibrations.” And with age comes more soul, I’m looking forward to it.
