We’ve always thought bunnies were cute but this rabbit turns us on! Cristina Fuentes and Derrick Estrada make up the Charlotte based duo known as Sonic Death Rabbit; the team who made all my death metal rave dreams come true this past Saturday night at the FrequeNC Records headquarters.
Collectively, Sonic Death Rabbit hurl a heavy hand of competition into the emerging genre of eight-bit GameBoy. Derrick manipulates sub-genres of electronic music such as breakcore, hardcore, industrial and IDM, while Cristina distorts the noise coming from her GameBoy Color, changes deranged bunny costumes and day glow colored executioner’s hoods, and howls full throttle into the mic. We were just impressed to see a girl DJ do more than push a button every few moments. The two seem to pour every ounce of energy and creativity into their set, playing to their true talent and not to the crowds preference. Cristina used her metal mouth for a Prince rendition, revving up the mostly twenty something crowd for the all night party. Yes, Cristina is known to pull off one of the one of the best (ok, the only good) Prince cover. We knew it was time to take our coats off and stay a while.
The vicious bass pushed the limits of the studio’s soundproofing and the cops eventually stopped by, but the couple have a reputation to uphold – 120 BPM and nothing under. And they take a great deal of care to balance out their aural onslaught with melodic low-fi. Our night was complete when Juan Huevos threw down with Cristina for a perverse tale of copulation. Hell yes, and thank you Charlie Hearon for throwing a great party.
