NightLight has all the charm of a basement party and some good bands to boot. Acoustics bounce well off cement walls and the low ceiling, there’s a bench in the alley for smokers, and the perimeter is still lined with second hand couches, bookshelf ruins and amps to rest your rump on. Props to new owner Alexis for not mucking up the vibes.
I think it is important to note that as I am writing this review, Wolfmother plays in my headset because I can’t help but think that Lake Inferior should veer in their direction. It would not be a stretch for them; stronger drums and saucier lyrics. But these boys have just begun to work on their sound. The EP comes out January 30th and they have a running shot at making a name for themselves in this town.
I’ve not been privy to a pre-release CD, but between their Nightlight set and MySpace page, each song has a uniqueness to it, some dwindle down while others progress and a few have slight ethnic variables that I wouldn’t mind hearing more of. I suppose it is only natural for Carrboro natives to be influenced by Ben Folds, but I think it’s more important that they draw from My Morning Jacket and The Flaming Lips, taking the indie rock down a notch and adding versatility. And it’s to Inferior’s advantage that the vocalist doesn’t sound as young as he looks, his charred voice dragging out all of the n’s is part of what reeled me in. From where we stood, the only cringe factor was the few vocals that nearly crossed over to Jethro Tull land, and the preoccupation with 80’s kitsch.
In most cases, I find that the opening band is far better than the headliner, but I spent most of Harmute’s set talking with new friends. We’ll have to catch up with those guys next time.
