Ani Hoover is Super Cool, Yeah!
by Laura 11/26
We were bored - we've seen it before - the gold frames, the oils pastels, the knit tendrils dangling from the ceiling, we needed to escape, and fast. As fast as our legs could carry us, we bolted down the 5th floor corridor of the Tri-Main Center smack into the setting up of a gallery opening. Fearful of being caught snooping, we ducked into corners and hid in crevices, but found at last we were. Roberto Pachero snatched up the opportunity to approach us, but without scolding, invited us to tour the studios in back, escort-less no less.

The studios occupy space and time in a random fashion, as studios should. Disarray crowded the centers and burnt, shredded and paint smeared couches lined the outside walls. Half constructed paintings dangled furtively from hooks and ladders, sculptures sporadically splattered across studio coffee tables. We ventured into many and dove into a few, eyes leaping across stretched of canvas and to and fro before nude models. But somehow still, the galley itself beckoned our adventurous spirits.

In a post to appear sometime soon, these artists will all be mentioned by name, but lets turn our focus to one of our area favorites, Ani Hoover.

She grew up in green rural Missouri - most things from the central states get passed off as bland, but bland is not the word we'd use to describe the tasty bubbles that skew the cleanliness of her canvas. She's surely reconfigured the idea of inner landscape, or the mental landscape that each person maintains, mows and waters. I myself feel that just maybe, mine is a bit overgrown.

So Hoover's internal turned external mindscapes look like pooled melted gummy bears and vibrant spit bubbles from your last trip down Opium Lane. She has gained a substantial cult following during these last few years due to the unparalleled subject matter of her work. We're happy to be a part of that group and so danced like merry ferries in front of her painting, in celebration of her coming forth from her shell and out into the Buffalo spotlight.
