Raleigh: The Bain Project, round 2

Twelve artists will install, or perform, site specific art nine months in the making, at the historic E.B. Bain Waterworks. Though visitors will be familiar with the mediums used, the focus is more on the way the artists have developed their ideas in the building itself and represented it’s legacy. “One of the requirements set out from the start was that the work HAD to be about the space; this wasn’t an opportunity for artists to simply showcase their work in a ‘cool’ space. An additional goal that developed through the process of the 9 month collaboration was the attempt to utilize, as much as possible, the indigenous materials in the space,”stated Daniel Kelly, coordinator. Some may cry, others will weep, I’ll be swimming in glory.

Philly: Salad Days

John O’Donnell, of Connecticut, is opening at FLUXspace with a site specific Installage (and collage!). Salad Days celebrates the inexperience, indiscretion and charming ignorance of an idealized youth, while scolding puberty for the complications it has wrought.

Perverts enter here. Salad Days evokes the vague period before childhood ends and the maturation process begins, a place where sexual thoughts and assumptions are misunderstood and result in indistinct notions of yourself and others. O’Donnell creates an encompassing space—through the use of unadulterated colors, plastic textures, familiar symbols of celebration and summer play—which mimics the comfort and excitement of a child’s birthday party. However, sexual undercurrents and visual saturation subvert these playful qualities, resulting in subtle perversions and misconstrued exaggerations of puberty’s mysteries.
