One Duran and Yugen play tonight at Fuse on Rosemary Street for the Thursday crowd, although the venue’s website says nothing of the like. Shame for not promoting such local and obvious talent. These guys are part of the 1200 Problems crew here in Carrboro and past guest DJs on WXYC 89.3. The crew has proclaimed their sound as “party all the time; everything sounds like the future,” where they emphasize the importance of mixing up genres and letting loose of safety net records.

For One Duran, his niche is an up beat mix with Latin and House influences. But he’s not locked into this style, in fact he’s rather hard to categorize when he spins records from the Hyphy movement, hardcore scene and dance pop. It goes without saying that the transitions between them are seamless and the hours pass before you realize you should excuse yourself for another beer. And yes, it’s impossible not to shake your hips when he’s mixing the rough cuts with the smooth, this man has some sexy going on.

On the same label comes Yugen, with experimental mixes of trip hop and dubstep. His beats follow a more psychedelic path though he loves his mid tempo bassline and I wasn’t beyond a slow groove at my desk. He takes full advantage of the intros / outros and considers consonance a foundation, as far as I can tell from his Virb playlist. The songs each have their own personality, some dark and moody with omnipresent bass and others with a drifty synth and rapid drums, all have minimal vocals.

These guys need to get their 1200 Problems site back up so we can enjoy the collective noise daily. Come show love around 9 PM.
