What Tony Billoni once conceived as a simple but titillating after-party, Hallwalls has since transformed into one of the most well-attended and gratifying parties in Buffalo. With plenty to see, hear, feel and taste, guests of Artists & Models: Stimulus will interact with artists and models of all disciplines and genders for a night of fun in a west side warehouse. As promised, today and tomorrow we are giving you a sneak preview into the 24th Annual Artists & Models event, so put on your party hats and prepare for stimulation.

One of Hallwalls’ most loyal exhibitors, David Butler is celebrating his 22nd year of participation with a troupe set forth to contaminate the crowd. “He’s a local jack of all trades: writer, artist, stage designer,” says Hallwalls Director Polly Little. “He’s created a lot of different exhibits but they’re almost always performance-based and audience participational. This year there will be eight people, including himself, in blue zoot suits, representing HazMat, toting around hazardous waste. He’s always entertaining.”

Kyle Butler joins Alice Alexandrescu and Marc Tomko for a theatrical recreation of the film Free Willy, namely the part when Willy jumps over the barrier wall. Performed in various locations through out the venue and the evening, a buffalo will replace the whale to reflect the state of our city; jumping from the waters of despair into an ocean of progress. Wetsuits are advised, but not required.

One interactive segment in particular is expected to have a long line of eager patrons. Book cover designer, Buffalo booster and UB Grad student, Shasti O’Leary, has proposed the idea of a gender-bending Wheel of Fortune photo booth. Land on any combination of the 23 colored spheres and you’ll be transformed into an anomaly. “I intend to engage in a playful photographic representation of the performative aspects of gender, utilizing the party-goers as ‘gamblers’ and models, commenting on the capricious, ambiguous and mysterious nature of sexual determination and identity,” states O’Leary. Each model will receive a signed 11×17 digital print signed by the artist, free of charge.

The final reveal, and possibly the most exhilarating, will take place right at the entryway of Rock Harbor Commons. In true vaudeville fashion, fire swallowers will wow attendees as they are still removing their jackets.

Other 2010 participating artists include 404 Error, AWK Group, Katrina Boemig, Aasta Deth, Nancy J. Parisi and many more who surely will arouse and satisfy. Tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. As a reminder, guests are encouraged to ride their bicycles or take the free shuttle from Buffalo State College’s N Lot on Grant Street.
