Tiger Strikes Asteroid is not a band or a new flavor of bubble gum, it’s an artist-run, artist-curated and emerging art focused gallery in Philly. For their July exhibit, they’ve chosen two artists whose work is complementary based on the idea of Manifest Destiny.
Brooklyn’s Andrew Prayzner pairs his mule paintings with William Crump’s delicate, nostalgic drawings of early American mountain folk for a nostalgic juxtaposition of ownership, expansion and entreprenuership. Prayzner’s mules are young drug traffickers pictured postarrest in their underwear with drugs taped to their bodies and their faces pixillated to protect their identities. Though this series was based on a National Geographic article from the 1980’s, the lapse in time has changed nothing. Current headlines boast stories of the Mexican Cartel and border-jumping has become increasingly hostile. Set beside Crump’s wispy drawings, we not only witness similarities in the greed, but disappointment in our country’s inability to learn from its mistakes. Crump’s work does hold its own against the colorful aggressive paintings by virtue of an attention to detail.
Be sure to get out and shake some hands with those who put together the well curated show! Opening tonight at 6 PM, 319A North 11th Street, 4th Floor.
