After reading through Scott’s blog, dated back to 2006, its occurred to me that this guy has a pretty admirable work ethic – his designs have matured, progressed and become his full time gig. I like to pretend it’s easier to be creatively motivated when you surround yourself with other creative types; His wife hand crafts felted squids to adorn clothing and other items with. Scott designed both of their logos – illustrating his own base fonts, distressing them sans a specialty Photoshop brush and making various renditions for the sake of switching it up every once in a while.
His mexi-cali style is not so west coast though, Scott grew up in Jersey before relocating to Steel City. He outright states that God is a major player in his work, from conception to completion, and that theology has driven him to create a series of work based on Biblical murders, pictured left. But these portraits won’t be found in your New King James, Cain and Abel come covered in full body pieces, Sisera is an urban hippie and Jezebel’s practically a pin-up. The modernized murders would make great album art for Lamb of God.
Benson gets away with using a minimal color palette because there are varying weights to his graphic lines and distinct expression in his characters. It almost seems that they were illustrated with pen and ink instead of using a Wacom Tablet. His watercolor paintings, example to the right, lack the heavy line work but follow suit with minimal color, mostly dark earth tones. These two examples depict a vast diversity in Benson’s work, the ability to cater to his clientele and his willingness to continue searching for new ways. I’m optimistic about his watercolor shapes, they are very clean, precise and don’t bleed into each other. I believe I read that some paintings when purchased even come accompanied by a mini biography; the life and times of Scott Benson’s made-up characters.
Lastly, and most importantly because he’s settled on the South Side, Scott Benson draws custom tattoos. He’s had a few takers so far and is working up some flash art for the local skin carvers, but in the interest of those who place all their trust in a design that’s been taped to a wall for ten years and reproduced on hundreds of fun loving teenage girls, get a fresh piece of flash on BombsFall.com
