Seen at the latest NCSU Senior Design show, graphic designer and typographer Ryan Cook had quite a showing that peaked our interests.

Heavily influenced by modernism and the holy grid, Cook has the ability create a striking composition with a minimal amount of components. His moniker ‘Somethingplanned’ is perhaps indicative of the time preparing each piece and the craftsmanship of each print. An obvious fan of Helvetica, many of his works are informational with concise direction and instruction. Unlike many designers, Ryan skillfully integrates shape and subtle photographic elements into his work without being obtrusive. Much of his work could be compared to contemporary trends which is a great start for someone right out of school.

Presumably interning at the illustrious Yee-Haw Industries, Ryan has provided an excellent, behind the scenes look at custom letterpress. It is quite amazing the amount of work that is required for even the simplest, well crafted print. It looks like he has been busy with finely, linoleum cut illustrations and event posters. For anyone familiar with letterpress you’ll appreciate the workmanship here.

Check out more of Ryan’s work.
