In the modern world of impermanence drivers move on, passerby’s pass by, and cargo comes and goes, but Jim Zellinger will be there.

It’s safe to say that the big rig industry has acquired an unfortunate reputation for bad roadside manner, gas guzzling and urban unappeal. But, while the rest of us subconsciously wish these respectable transportation devices, and their drivers, away, Jim Zellinger relishes their existence – they remind him of home, of a nationwide commonality. “Having traveled extensively, I am constantly comparing the common threads, rituals, customs and personality of my home with wherever I may happen to reside. As I continue to examine the modern Midwest, I would like to again address the constant and enduring images of this part of the country.”

The simplistic, painterly backgrounds in varying shades of primary colors and subtle hints as to the environment are a constant in Zellinger’s series. His subjects on the other hand, are exquisitely illustrative; lucid paintings that don’t dare undermine the significance of each letter, number or sticker and how they reflect the individual personalities of the trailers. Zellinger has a concise and purposeful understanding of horizon line, drawing the viewers eye into his paintings, forcing a comparison to reality.

I thoroughly enjoyed the layout os his website; taking a chronological journey through the body of work, watching the exposure of preliminary sketches over the background acrylic develop and his style, technique and attention to details are improve year to year. Take a few minutes and view his work here.
