Jesse Penico has been sitting in my bookmark folder for months and every so often I pull him out to remind myself that there are original kids coming out of art school that we could hire.
I really enjoy skimming Jesse’s website. He uses typography in new and interesting ways; while his classmates are mimicking all things popular on the web, vintage reproductions, collage and light hearted illustrations, Jess is deconstructing foreboding photographs and reconstructing them with type. His work is genderless. He places just as much importance on negative space as he does positive, and he defines the shape of the piece with his graphics. Each addition to his portfolio is a brand new idea, yet his portfolio works as a whole – I’m sure a few days at RELEVANCE taught him everything a school couldn’t.
Fun facts about Jesse: He’s got good taste in music for the most part. He seems like a nice kid that hasn’t gotten caught up in the post-college-money-in-my-pocket scene that sacrifices dedication for fun. He isn’t a vegetarian. He is grateful for his talent. Thank you Twitter for allowing us to stalk whomever we please!
