The first time you saw Return To Oz you knew it wasn’t exactly a children’s movie, even though it was labeled so. It was just creepy enough to make children and parents alike squirm. Evan Jenson, a DC illustrator has found his sweet spot in that same niche.

He says its his love of dogs and strong cheese that has gotten him to this point, but I think it’s his natural ability to combine the fantastical with science fiction in such a sweet and approachable way. The robot that causes devastation is just as endearing as the bulldozer next door and the armored hedge hog, like dressing up your chihuahua. “In college, the focus drew in tight and creatures great and small began to populate places Evan would inhabit,” states Evan’s bio. “Studios, apartments, kitchens, bulletin boards, gallery walls were all fair territory for the offspring of his pen. This led rather circuitously to an interest in children’s books, while never letting go of the fantasy which had rooted itself in his style.”

If habitat has much to do with personal style and manner of working, Evan belongs in the local cavern. His monotone sketches have a very dark and mysterious air to them, and the intricate details are fascinating. This isn’t an artist who relies on color to fill the void, or the computer to perfect his line quality. Jenson has, wisely, listed his broad skill set on the info page of his website, something I believe more artists should do. Most clients don’t actually know what they may want (or need) from you.
