Prison style tattoos no longer fly when each major city has its own brand of artists, parlors and vibes. Customers are seeking the best of the best – whether it means a road trip or a plane flight.
13 Roses has been a fixture on the corner of Glendale since 2005, thanks to owners, the nationally renowned Watson Atkinson and the fully suited Johnny Rockit, who make it their responsibility to maintain a clean shop with a growing list of clients, including Chingy and numerous Suicide Girls. But their shop boasts more than great tattoos; the aesthetic of the space itself is enough to keep patrons within its confines for hours. Imagine you climb blue stairs to an etched glass door and realize you nearly interrupt a game of pool. Immediately your eyes skip down the long center-hall gallery filled with framed tattoo related prints, original paintings and professional, brilliant, photographs of custom skin art.

And breathe. You have time to shoot pool, lounge on their vintage sofa and rifle through the portfolios. You can’t peek into the individual rooms though – frosted glass and stenciled sayings like “Private Work for the Ladies” keep peeping toms like you away. “[This place] was simply loaded with character,” adds Watson. “It recalls a past era of tattooing in America.”

Russ Abbott opened Ink & Dagger in 2007 after apprenticing with Atkinson and Rockit, among others, when he realized his skill level was that of a shop master. Decatur was only minutes from downtown Atlanta, and was beginning to take on the role of “new capitol” when Abbott opened shop. Differing from other parlors he’d matured in, Ink & Dagger was repurposed with the feel of an “old timey gentlemen’s club”: mounted beasts, custom furniture, littered with antiques and dark wood, and peppered with original illustration work. Ink & Dagger’s cigar room atmosphere and talented residents has inspired guests artists such as Dustin Bredlau, Tom Michael, Kurt Fagerland, Jeremy Sutton, Shack and Mat Moreno to make an appearance in Decatur.
