Well Hung

What are you doing this Friday night?
Mark's having a party - it'll be tight!
The gallery fills with booze and tunes,
we've invited all of Buffalo's goons.
It is the last time Matt's showing his work,
come crack a beer, don't be a jerk.
The celebration starts promptly at seven,
it's glorious, like manna from heaven.

Get Some Fresh Air

In memory of our three hour drives, which will be revived shortly, we're taking a mini drive to Springville, NY, last stop on the 219. Sounds boring right? Well pack the bike and a camera and spend a day relaxing, exploring and discovering what David Plowden deemed the perfect small town.

One your way to Springville, stop at the East Aurora Farmer's Market at the Village Shopping Center on Grey street for some healthful treats, also baked goods, for the ride. Next stop, Springville, where I advise you to spend a couple hours in beautiful 70 degree weather stopping in the local diners, scoping the landscape and chatting up the farmers.

Saturday is open mic night at the Center for the Arts. The last open mic successfully turned out more than seventy people with over a dozen local talents performing their best. They are probably one of the only venues around that will still give you free refreshments just for showing up. Doors are at 7 PM but if you want to sing shout and dance in front of the natives, be there at 6:30 PM.

So you might need a drink after shmoozing with that rowdy crowd, but the historic Joylan Theater is bellowing your name. This ancient cinmateque seats 700 people, boasts original Art Moderne interior arches and trim, and is the heart of the city with it's Art Deco exterior. Currently playing, The Chronicles of Narnia. Prince Caspian is sort of hunky.

I want to believe that there is a bar in Springville. Just head up the road, when you see a fire hydrant turn right and then count eight steps...

Copp a Feel
5/24 by laura
Because it's worth noting in its own post, friend, former co-worker and punk rock photographer Luke Copping is currently having his first solo show at Nichols School Gallery until June 20th.

Luke's professional career stems from experience in graphic design and web design, which taught him the fundamentals of composition, space and lighting. But somewhere in the 2D world, translation was lost. Luke began his series of work after assisting local photographers on high fashion assignments. His idea was to combine the look and feel of fresh angles associated with high fashion with his love for underground culture. His photographs mold the models into the chosen background, usually a decrepit structure, but also juxtapose them against it.

He has the advantage of having an MUA girlfriend which allows him to appreciate the innovative techniques in make-up and hair and they become the focal points in much of his work. His other advantage is the use of a variety of models - all shapes and sizes. Green Tea Magazine recently featured a spread of Luke's work and an interview. Be sure to stop by Nichol's, the prints are more far more inspiring in person.

Another website to peruse while we're on the topic of photography, is Southern Tier native Frank Petronio's. We love his candid and honest blurbs about his work and the people he spends his time with.

Alright already, we know we've been slacking so we want to say thanks for those still reading (probably the archives). This article is dedicated to all the things we should have been saying all month long!

Music:

To begin with, A Hotel Nourishing goes on tour with Rebecca Ryskalczyk on the 30th and so will be playing one final show in Buffalo on the 29th at Soundlab, until they return in July...

Besnyo released a new EP last month while we were vacationing, but we took it along and let's just say it sounds like the building and release of tension -the feeling of compression and relaxation. Not to be excessive, the guys have really come together considering they are a rather large group of guys contributing to each song. I said that their last release was great but Buffalo should feel lucky to have them, especially since we're still riding on the coat tails of Snapcase days.

Speaking of Besnyo, they are opening for the Sleeping Kings of Iona at their CD Release Party for I Hide From You, this Saturday at Merlin's, 10 PM.

Art:

Matt is having his closing party at the Guerilla Gallery above Madd Tat2 next week Friday from 7-9 PM. Prints are super cheap and so is the beer! Stop by!

The Buffalo Arts Studio is hosting The Imaginary Line exhibit along with Hallwalls and El Museo. This exhibit explores social, cultural and political boundaries that arise and exist within communities as well as within individuals. Multiple, internationally know artists are participating in the traveling show including: Peter Dykhius, Paula Braswell, Shelly Niro and Leandro Soto. Check it out before August 9th (ya got a while).

Big Orbit's current video installation is a project called Double Narcissism by Geoffrey Alan Rhodes. The project is based on his Mirror Series in which a mirror performance is taped from unique angles so that the camera itself is not captured in the image. Double Narcissism relies on hidden layers and development as its foundation.

The Carnegie Art Center is currently showing works by Dennis DeHart, Chris Ernst, and Mili Pradhan for the Media Arts Regrant Exhibition. They will be screening works by Stefani Bardin, Holly Johnson & Meg Knowles, Howard Kim, Jamie O'Neil, Julie Perini, Alan Rhodes, and Seth Wochensky on June 6th at Squeaky Wheel for $6.

And last but not least, because I miss our Friday 3 hour drives so much, I would like to hope you heed my advice and drive to Cleveland as quickly as possible. It is SPACES Gallery's 30th Anniversary and they have invited Jake Beckman, Amy Casey, Ji?í ?ernický, Todd DeVriese, Claudia Esslinger, Kevin Everson, Colette Gaiter, Billie Grace Lynn, Pipo Nguyen-duy, Patrick Robideay and Karen Yasinsky to show their most current works. Talk about a good time!

Miscellaneous:

Mark Miremont is on the lookout for vintage cars to restore. You want him to take on off your hands? Reach him here:
