Prepare For Doomsday!
5/14 by laura
It's a time in Buffalo when the gloom clouds disintegrate and spirits temporarily lift to make way for the warm season and also to welcome an understated hometown band's new album. Here Come the Comets will officially release Falling Anvils: Love Songs for the Doomed and Secretly Happy at their Live in Allen Hall performance.

The concert will be broadcast live on WBFO - check with BRO if you want to read their shameless promotion - and will start at 8PM, but the show is free so tune out the radio and stop by to meet the guys in person. They are an eclectic bunch with a palpable unity and smooth blending of talents. The album is no doubt an extension of their alter egos; "The album is a moody, somewhat schizophrenic collection of love songs that deal with doomsday scenarios, drug addiction, haunted houses, dead relatives and country girls who have the power to cast spells on unsuspecting suitors," states vocalist Todd. "The sound is eclectic and ranges from bombastic, heavily layered guitar anthems to minimal morose piano ballads."

These guys have been directly influenced by David Bowie, T-Rex, Brian Eno, Yo La Tengo, Spiritualized and everything from Stax soul records to old school country greats, but quite obviously by a local genius as well. The album includes three interchangeable covers done by once-featured Artery artist, Rob Lynch. His work lends itself well to Here Come the Comets cover art because it also is an unruly combination of painterly tempos, colors and subjects. Each cover can convey something so unique to each person interpreting; they lack one certain focal point in favor of an entire composition.

Be present and show some support. Buy a CD, maybe two or three. The next show isn't until May 30th at Mohawk Place, so don't be the last to get in on the action.

Matt's Famous!
5/9 by laura
Before the annual pot roast dinner and potted flower gift giving, stop by for some wholesome fun at the Guerilla Gallery where our very own Matt Duquette will be showing off his goods.

Having once been scolded for deeming Matt's art "visually barbaric", I will say that his musically influenced pieces fit well into the street art themed gallery. His focus remains on the physical response created by emotional stressors. This underlying subject matter creates a unity between the pieces, although each was created during different stages of his life. Prints will be for sale for any and all of the work.

Greg Sobczak will be displaying his most recent paintings as well. Greg has been a featured artist and a good friend since the interview. He was recently ranked in Artvoice's "Best Of", as one of the Buffalo's most talented artists. Party noise will be fashioned by DJ Sux and DJ Slobbanozzle.

I almost guarantee that there will be random meat plates and plenty of Busch beer.

Sit and Spin On It
5/6 by laura
I can't recall the last time I held vinyl in my hand. I also can't recall the last time I left my iPod at home. Let's take it old school and hit up Sit and Spin.

We stopped into Rise Above yesterday, thinking they'd be open, and realized that Sit and Spin is still there. I had assumed they closed along with all the other places that made Buffalo cool - by the way, we're moving now. A long long time ago, these guys were sued by a little shit head. When Dumb Ass Kid X tried to mosh in middle of the record store and hurt his twiggy little legs, he decided that Sit and Spin would pay the price but the owners decided it was time for a makeover anyways and took the opportunity to relocate. The shows are no more and neither are the stinky couches, but the tickets, the comics and the VHS's still are.

It is a narrow, eclectic and weathered hideaway. In subject and sociability, this is not a place for the mainstream or even Hot Topic kids; Sit and Spin was intended for punks, hardcore and indie rock kids. On one of the middle racks, Jeffrey Brown comics lineup and on a side wall, a Bob Seger painting. Owners Geoff and Martin have deemed Sit and Spin a labor of love that occasionally turns a profit. They are the type of people that we need in this town - the type that picks the name of their business from Urban Dictionary and actually work in their own stores. Drop in and buy something - the Breakfast record?
