We have heard quite the outcry from UB students regarding our review of the Visual Studies thesis show, good and bad, and all we have to say is - we hope that the Media Students don't follow suit. They will be presenting a night of sound at Gallery 1716.
The new gallery space is an addition to a recently converted loft apartment space near Lafayette and West Balcom, in a midtown area that was in dire need of some young culture, still a bit shady but flanked by the Anderson Gallery and Artspace. The show is named for the the battle cry of the Lost Boys in Hook, but can also mean uproar or disturbance in Jamaican slang and an exclamation meant to signify approval or amazement in English slang. These are some big britches to fill, but if the past installations that have come from this department are any indication, they should fill them out quite nicely.
The media studies course was taught this semester by Jessica Thompson who felt as though the students needed a theoretical, historical, and practical introduction to sound as a creative medium. Jessica Thompson is a new media artist whose practice encompasses sound, performance and mobile technologies. Her projects enable audience members to create user-defined spaces and situations within urban environments. From what we hear, she has done well to develop each of their artistic styles into entirely experimental installations that interact with the public and yet speak to their individuality. Media Studies student and manager of Hot Topic, Kim Barton states, "My piece consists of me being locked in a room where guests can only communicate with me through a radio transmission, after which they can make me do anything they want. I invited some of my employees and told them they shouldn't pass up a chance to be able to tell their boss what to do. Hopefully, I won't regret saying that!"
The exhibition will also include interactive sound projects from the following artists: Andrew Fried, Justin Chartrand, Krista Richards, Sergio Tupac Uzurin, Zach Baliva, Derrik Chamberlain, Scott Bykowicz, Damian Tetrowski, Rachel Smith, Bin Na Jung, Gregory A. Walters, Di E. Vito, Brenda C. Diaz, Jacob B. Warren, Jim Del Fuoco, Dan Schiffmacher, Sir Robert J. Farrell III, Brandon Peszko, Matt Minotti and Ryan Luechau. Food and alcohol will be served.
